Join award-winning Foley artist John Roesch as we explore sound design and the art of Foley for film. John will demonstrate the art of creating sound effects that are synchronized with the visuals on screen, and will also include audience members in our exploration of sound for films.
From the suspenseful music to the creaking doors, sound plays a significant role in creating a terrifying cinematic experience. Foley artists are responsible for creating the sounds of footsteps, clothing rustling, and other subtle sounds that help create a sense of dread, suspense and horror. Foley can also be used to create more gruesome sound effects, such as bone-breaking or flesh-tearing sounds, often layering them with other sounds or manipulate them to create a unique effect.
About John:
John Roesch is an American Foley artist who was the head Foley artist at Lucasfilm's Skywalker Ranch where he provided Foley sound effects for over 400 films, with more than 50 Nominations and 15 Wins for Sound Editing.
His work can be heard on such diverse films as Pinocchio, Lightyear, Encanto, Star Wars, Tenet, Avengers Endgame, Frozen and Toy Story 4.
John retired in 2023 from full-time Foley work but continues to work in the business. He is in demand as a featured speaker and creates Foley learning experiences for novices and professionals alike.
