Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound at Cameo Cinema

Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound

95 mins | Rated TBC

Directed by Midge Costin

Starring Ryan Coogler, Robert Redford, David Lynch, Christopher Nolan

SOLD OUT Most movie audiences don't notice sound in the same way they do vision. It's just taken for granted. Even many people in the industry don't really quite know the difference between a sound designer and a sound mixer, even though there are separate Oscar categories for the two disciplines.

Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound finally puts the artisans of the audible in front of the camera with a breezy, entertaining, and educational exploration of how dialogue, music, and Foley effects – as well as the all-powerful silence – affect what we're watching.

It's also a rare chance to see the sound sculptors themselves. So next time you hear Chewbacca roar or the snow crackling underfoot in Inception, you'll finally be able to put a face – and, most importantly, a voice – to the names that speed by in the credits.

NEW Science on Screen®:
An examination of how sound design transforms the cinematic experience, and an exploration of the cutting edge of sound technology.

About the film: Directed by veteran Hollywood sound editor Midge Costin, the film reveals the hidden power of sound in cinema, introduces us to the unsung heroes who create it, and features insights from legendary directors with whom they collaborate.

Featuring the insights and stories of iconic directors such as George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, David Lynch, Barbra Streisand, Ang Lee, Sofia Coppola and Ryan Coogler, working with sound design pioneers–Walter Murch, Ben Burtt and Gary Rydstrom–and the many women and men who followed in their footsteps.
97% Fresh Rottentomatoes

Curated Q&A Panel following the film.

Special guests from Skywalker Sound:
Foley Artists John Roesch and Shelley Roden.

As part of the creative team at Skywalker Sound, John and Shelley recently received the prestigious Golden Reel Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing for Toy Story 4, this year’s Oscar recipient for “Best Animated Film.” They are also known for their work on Spies in Disguise, Avengers: Endgame , Black Panther, Dunkirk, and Thor: Ragnorak.

We are thrilled to have local vintner Robert Foley, whose grandfather Jack is the namesake for "Foley" sound, join the Q&A.
