A paean to the world of perfume and the gift that is our sense of smell, we say this is a must-watch for anyone who loves fragrance. Les Parfums (‘Perfumes’) is an utterly charming French film following the life of a feared and reclusive ‘nose’, and her troubled relationship with her new chauffeur. The film is a wonderful evocation of that joy of sharing a love of fragrance, of watching someone develop and explore their own sense of smell. And it’s also a healthy reminder that anosmia – losing one’s sense of smell – can be a terrifying and life-changing experience, even if you don’t happen to be a perfumer. There’s some stunning shots of the French countryside and those Parisian streets we miss so much, too. French with English subtitles.
100% FRESH ROTTENTOMATOES
A Science On Screen© Presentation
The Nose Knows (and What it Doesn't Know, It Can Learn)
Is a "nose" born, or is a sense of smell something that can be developed and deepened over time?
Join Cathy Buck and natural perfumer, Jessica Mennella, for a conversation about scent and the olfactory system, along with a fun and fascinating dive into deepening your sense of smell. Cathy and Jess will then lead you through a (blind) smelling exercise designed to challenge what you know about scent.
Jessica Mennella is a natural perfumer and scent instructor in St. Helena. Working with the essences of the plant world (the essential oils, absolutes, and resins of the plants and flowers) Jessica's line, FLWR Napa Valley, puts nature at hand.
A Science on Screen event, promoting the creative pairings of current, classic, cult, and documentary films with lively introductions by notable figures from the world of science, technology, and medicine.
