Set against the stark beauty of a windswept German island in the final days of World War II, Amrum is a haunting and lyrical coming-of-age story that examines the collapse of fascism through the eyes of a boy caught between innocence and ideology. At just 12 years old, Nanning dons the uniform of the Hitler Youth while caring for his fragile, pregnant mother Hille and younger brother in their seaside home. Radio broadcasts announce Hitler’s downfall, yet in Nanning’s world, survival eclipses politics.
Rather than seeking sympathy for a child marked by Nazi indoctrination, the film reveals the humanity that survives beneath imposed hatred—reminding us that children absorb the world around them, whether cruelty or compassion.
Visually breathtaking, with painterly seascapes and moments of charged silence, Amrum is at once a war film without battlefields and a luminous portrait of moral awakening. Officially selected for the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and featuring German screen legend Diane Kruger.
