La Danse
Esteemed director Frederick Wiseman’s new film follows the production of seven ballets by the Paris Opera Ballet presented in breathtaking images in the beautiful Palais Garnier. If you do not know the names of the stars of the Paris Opera Ballet — Aurélie Dupont and Laetitia Pujol stand out particularly — you will gain an almost palpable sense of who they are. As the NY Times critic A. O. Scott recently wrote, “To say that the film, sumptuous in its length and graceful in its rhythm, is a feast for ballet lovers is to state the obvious and also to sell Mr. Wiseman’s achievement a bit short. Yes, this is one of the finest dance films ever made, but there’s more to it than that.” Mr. Wiseman’s primary interest has always been the observation of groups of people functioning in a specific professional or social perspective.
